My employment at OB Sports was without a doubt one of the most important developmental experiences I have ever had. I worked in the Player Services department at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club, and my list of responsibilities would vary day to day. Generally I prefer to have everything I need to do on a list and work through the items one by one. However, this job forced me to become more adaptive. One day I could spend most of my time tidying up the cart barn, the next day training a new employee, and the day after that I would be responsible for preparing for a 200 person tournament set to tee off at 7am.
Cleaning golf carts, maintaining the driving range, cleaning members’ golf clubs, and maintaining pace of play were just a few of my main responsibilities. Because of the nature of the job, I rarely had a supervisor overseeing me while I was working, and I would be evaluated entirely on outcome rather than process. This forced me to manage my time efficiently in order to make sure I was ready to deal with any unexpected issues without compromising customer satisfaction or basic course functionality.
I could write an essay on all the fundamental skills I developed working at the course, but the one I am most thankful for is independence. The job was a unique blend of needing to get everything done without direct instruction while also needing to communicate effectively with other departments and develop positive relationships with members to ensure the best experience possible. I worked there for just under three years and continue to rely on the skill I developed there.
